Vepr Molot

$1,300.00

The Vepr Molot (often simply referred to as “Vepr”) is a series of semi-automatic rifles and shotguns produced by the Molot Machine-Building Plant (Вятско-Полянский машиностроительный завод “Молот”) located in Vyatskiye Polyany, Russia. These firearms are renowned for their exceptional robustness, reliability, and accuracy, largely due to their lineage from the Soviet RPK light machine gun. Molot’s Vepr line was primarily developed for the civilian market, intended for hunting, sport shooting, and self-defense. However, their military-grade construction makes them extremely durable and capable platforms.

RPK Heritage: The Heart of the Vepr

What fundamentally sets the Vepr apart from many other AK-pattern firearms is its origin from the RPK (Ruchnoy Pulemyot Kalashnikova – Kalashnikov Handheld Machine Gun). The RPK itself is an AK derivative designed for sustained fire and increased range compared to the standard AK-47/AKM. This lineage imparts several key features to the Vepr:

  1. Heavy-Duty Receiver: Veprs utilize the RPK’s 1.5mm thick stamped steel receiver (compared to the standard AK’s 1.0mm). This thicker receiver, combined with a reinforced front trunnion, makes the Vepr exceptionally rigid and durable.
  2. Heavy, Hammer-Forged, Chrome-Lined Barrel: The RPK was designed for sustained fire, so it uses a heavier, more robust barrel. Veprs inherit this, featuring often fluted, hammer-forged, and chrome-lined barrels. This contributes significantly to their accuracy, longevity, and resistance to corrosion.
  3. Reinforced Components: Many internal components, such as the bolt carrier and operating rod, are also heavier and more robust than those found in standard AK rifles.

Key Features and Distinguishing Characteristics

  • Caliber Versatility: Veprs have been produced in a wide array of calibers, including:
    • Rifles: 7.62x39mm, 5.45x39mm, .223 Remington (5.56x45mm), .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm), 7.62x54R (the traditional Russian military cartridge), and even .243 Winchester.
    • Shotguns: 12 Gauge (Vepr-12), 20 Gauge, .410 Bore.
  • Integrated Scope Mount: Most Vepr rifles come with a side-mounted optic rail, which is a common feature on Russian military rifles. This allows for the attachment of various optics without interfering with the iron sights.
  • Sporterized Stock Configuration: Due to import restrictions in the United States and other Western countries, Veprs were typically imported with “sporter” stocks, often featuring a thumbhole or traditional Monte Carlo rifle stock configuration. This was to comply with regulations that restrict the importation of “military-style” features. Many owners in the US later converted these to more traditional AK/RPK furniture.
  • Non-Threaded Barrels (Common): To further comply with import restrictions, many Vepr rifles were imported with unthreaded muzzles, meaning they could not easily accept muzzle devices like flash hiders or suppressors.
  • High Quality Fit and Finish: Compared to many other AK variants, Veprs are generally known for their superior fit, finish, and attention to detail straight from the factory.
  • Adjustable Gas System (on some models): Particularly on Vepr-12 shotguns and some rifle variants, an adjustable gas system allows for reliable cycling with a wider range of ammunition.
